Abstract. This paper deals with egophoricity in Mehweb Dargwa, an East Caucasian language. The main proposal of this paper is that egophoricity should be analyzed as a syntactic phenomenon, due to its sensitivity to syntactic locality in Mehweb. The syntactic part of egophoricity is argued to involve two probes: a person probe and an index probe, the first being relevant for realization of egophoric morphology and the second for egophoric interpretation.

Keywords: egophoricity, agreement, de se
